# An introduction to ESU

## The start of ESU (formerly known as Epic Sum Up)

As the former name suggests, Epic Sum Up was created with a focus around epics, and the ability to break down epics into individual issues with a lot of control for the project manager.

Since then it has evolved into the tool Enterprise Summaries (also known as ESU) which gives you clear, visual and instantly understandable insights. Our goal is to provide project managers with more granular control and view of Jira issues.

Two features that were developed to aid in the easy viewing of issues:

**Progress bars** - these allow a simple "game-ified" visual way to view the progress of individual issues.

**The Summary Panel**- Summary Panels were created to give project managers a quick, easy to view summary of different progress bars.

Later the **Detail View Editor** was developed, to give project managers more control over the hierarchy \& layout structure of issues that are important to them.

## The three main features

![Highlight Image one_Live Reporting_Hi Res_1.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_37b93d9882805effd219c1c1a66c963b7fd57da93901ed7caaae78902b02fb23/Highlight%20Image%20one_Live%20Reporting_Hi%20Res_1.png?cb=3d38b7456992c75b704ccb1db38e557a)

### Live Reporting

Using dashboard gadgets and the Summary Panel, it's possible to add live reports (progress bars), to almost anywhere in Jira.
![Highlight Image two_easy editing_Hi res_1.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_6ba64df55cdfce6b315c83267f48917c368f0c9e95e2f499c1fbb85387dbf596/Highlight%20Image%20two_easy%20editing_Hi%20res_1.png?cb=42c72d8efdc79067ae318b481d89b1a9)

### Easy Editing

The Detail View Editor (DVE) allows you to organize reports and mass edit thousands of issues at once, based on issues/progress bars. It has everything you're used to in Excel.

You can also export this data for report purposes, to common file types such as Excel, and CSV - as well as other supported Jira apps.
![Highlight Image three_Better Organizing_Hi Res_1.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_b383201bb912324ca64dc84d9c6503d2c8051343b8885b15a64c7049ac656c03/Highlight%20Image%20three_Better%20Organizing_Hi%20Res_1.png?cb=2f3eb7b9aeb53a146ae8b9b85c43629e)

### Better Organizing

With the Detail View Editor, you can see the detailed \& complete hierarchies of issues, and filter them as you'd like. You can also easily edit values in most fields.

# Containers

## What are containers?

Containers are a flexible structural element. Similar to Jira epics, they can be parents of other issues.

## What can they be used for?

ESU containers allow you to create flexible structures. Containers are not bound to a specific issue type hierarchy, and they can be stacked to any height.

## Best Practices

Note that we have built the container feature only to extend - not replace - the building of Jira hierarchies.

Extending Jira hierarchies can look like:

* Grouping different Plans (formerly Advanced Roadmaps) hierarchies into one

* linking standard issue types directly to the top level container

* Link issues that don't have a parent link to a container

All of this flexible hierarchy building will be visible in the container panel (an improved version of the Jira hierarchy list) and Worksheet.
![Container in DVE.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_02b6aa323986fbfc94b3c10192731b4d22829069c8419f8cc75adf68dba851ba/Container%20in%20DVE.png?cb=d4be81d3c3b6a472b95f9de763d8bc21)

## How to use containers?

Please note that containers need to be configured by administrators first. Everything they need to know about the configuration can be found [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md).

### **1.The basics**

When it comes to using containers, there are two important elements: the container work item types and the container link method.

**Container work item types:**

In the configuration an administrator decides which work item types will be used as containers. Work item types that are already part of the Jira hierarchy like epics and Plans work item types (formerly Advanced Roadmaps) above can't be used.

**Container link types:**

There are two types of container links in the Cloud. An instance can only use one at a time.

|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| **Container link field** | **Work item links** |
| The container link field is a custom field that works like the Jira Parent field. It's the same as the container link field on Data Center. | You can create a custom work item link or use existing ones as well. Multiple link types can be used. |

The link type that's used in your instance is defined by the administrator.

### **2.The linking in the work item view**

**Container link field:**

The container link field like the Jira Parent field will be shown in the work item view where you can easily edit it. In which projects and work item types it is displayed depends on the screens your administrator has added it to. [Learn more about Jira screens](https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/manage-screen-schemes/).
![Container link.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_1ca4ca0961c380578e505d8c1b48cf7474eb499c4f73492d59b5ed74747ae8a6/Container%20link.jpg?cb=4cbb689765039a9e02cd2e611e550718)

**Work item links:**

When you're using work item links as container links, simply set them as you're used to. Keep in mind that the linking will only work when using the link and work item types set in the configuration.
![Create a link in the issue view.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_9b3665ba3eb93a6ccefb4a8d2f7f2e02e3e6834cd9e2a9e03bf318e7f3428651/Create%20a%20link%20in%20the%20issue%20view.png?cb=21664db7e542a68990b3c60e28affc9a)

### **3.The structure you built**

There are two places where you can view your built structures:

**Container panel:**

The container panel is similar to the Jira hierarchy list, only with a few additional features. You can add it to container work item types through the app menu.
![Container panel.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_884becb640c7995aa24af34c659fe343968a043611bc4db0394daf8d039fd196/Container%20panel.jpg?cb=e88eb91f01e3c49dca2d8fc8f875ec36)

**Worksheet:**

In the [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md) you can also see your whole hierarchy as well as edit it.

## Migrating containers

On Data Center containers use the container link field as well. This makes for a smooth and seamless migration when you want to use the same method on Cloud.

However, migrating Data Center containers to Cloud work item links is not possible automatically but instead has to be done manually.

When migrating we recommend using the container link field in Cloud as it guarantees a smooth migration that can be done with the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant.

[Migration guide](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/migration-from-server-to-cloud.md)

## Known limitations

There are some known limitations when it comes to using containers.

Jira only takes its own hierarchies into account. Which is why containers should not be used below epics, since work items below the container will not be visible e.g. in list views on agile boards. This is because Jira does not recognize the ESU container links.

If you use containers together with Plans (formerly Advanced Roadmaps), this will not be reflected in Plans. As Jira only recognizes its own hierarchies.

**When using work item links:**

If a work item has both a work item link (for building a container structure) and a Jira parent link, ESU will prioritise the parent links.

With work item links, circle connections can be built. While we made sure this cannot cause issues or that issues appear twice in the Worksheet, you may get different structures depending on the work item you are opening the Worksheet from.

# Counter configuration

## Counter group configuration

To add counters to a Summary Panel, navigate to the add field drop down menu. In the add field menu, select comments, attachments or a new counter group.
![Counter Config.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_8e9a6e2abaa0a7870353a514b25f0de87874a0d2bb611d5945ea05390d436d5c/Counter%20Config.png?cb=6126f6d4b8aa6a6542af19c252c9245b)

If you choose the counter group, select from the drop down menu which counters you want to add to the Summary Panel.

If you expand any of these elements you will find options to include containers/epics, and sub-tasks underneath.

All these options are explained [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/progress-bar-configuration.md).

## Expression counter configuration

Select a template or start from scratch with the 'Custom' option.

Customize the selected template, add a custom expression from the [template library](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/expression-customization-guide.md) or build your own custom expression from scratch.

Define which columns should appear in the Worksheet.

Take advantage of the custom progress format to show others what you're tracking. You can use text and/or UTF-8 icons.

# Dashboard gadget

## What is the ESU dashboard gadget?

We built our dashboard gadget to offer more functionality, using ESU features, than the default Jira dashboard offers. Essentially the ESU dashboard gadget allows you to use our progress bars for easy project tracking.
![Dashboard Gadget Cloud Light 4.1.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_6c3b25fa8e16115c590a9674ed76c111ad0a20752fbe27be8edd217438924cde/Dashboard%20Gadget%20Cloud%20Light%204.1.png?cb=f32625f0fb5eec506a5399e35609a032)

## What can you use it for?

The ESU dashboard gadget allows you to add progress bars and track issues across multiple epics, initiatives or parent issue types, with customizable metrics like time, story points or personnel costs.

You can use the ESU dashboard gadget to conveniently inline edit fields.

## How to configure the Dashboard Gadget?

1.Create a filter (Optional if you want to use JQL)

Within the Jira Issue Navigator, use basic filters or JQL to create the scope for your dashboard gadget. Once you save the filter, you can navigate to your dashboard.

2.Add the gadget to your dashboard

In the upper right-hand corner, click on the Edit button. Once you click Edit, you will see a search bar under Add a gadget, here you will need to type in ESU.

When you see ESU Filter Results, click the Add button underneath -- this will add ESU Filter Results Grid Gadget to your project dashboard.

3.Configure the dashboard gadget

Within the ESU Filter Results Grid Gadget, you will see a toggle button for Allow Cell Editing - turn this option on to enable inline editing (1).

## Features

![Detail View Editor light 4.1.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_ce12a33f0b4d6c925666d475b6ef67ac399054dc23dbb8f71f7f0a811eb48cf6/Detail%20View%20Editor%20light%204.1.png?cb=7d6303c0dbb4b6721fa2d76a097ddd04)

### Columns

On the right-hand side of the Worksheet, you will see a columns icon. This is the columns selector. With the columns selector, you can add or remove any columns you wish.

To find the right columns you can use the search bar up to search for either the field names or the different field types available.

See a list of which columns are available [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/which-fields-can-be-added-to-the-detail-view-edito.md).

Within the Worksheet, ESU offers you the ability to drag \& drop columns, into any order you wish.

When you are dragging and dropping columns within the Worksheet, you can make them "sticky" to keep them in one place. To make a column sticky, drag it over to the far left side of the Worksheet or use the pin option next to the column filters, and the column will "embed" itself. However, you can always drag the column back to another position.

To remove a column from your configuration, you can click on the columns icon to the right of the Worksheet, and click on the checkbox buttons to deselect certain columns and remove them. Another option is to move the column up to remove it, this is a bit faster.

You have the ability to sort by almost any column.
[Columns.mov](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_61f43f6f5d4a583845de4900353130553f47fbd2430f03b31bd7aae586a9132f/Columns.mov.md)

### Layouts

Within the Worksheet, once you have configured your columns in the order that you want, you have the ability to save this configuration as a layout. To save a configuration as a layout, click on the + icon in the upper right hand corner of the Worksheet. Once you have clicked +, you can name the layout and save it.

When you are saving your column layout, by default it will save it for your user only. However, if you are a Jira administrator, you can save your column layout as a global layout.

To do this, click on the + icon as you normally would to save the layout. As an administrator, you will see a toggle that says Create Layout as Global, on the bottom left corner of the pop up window.

You can also save layouts as default for specific progress bars in the [progress bar configuration](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/progress-bar-configuration.md).

To edit a layout, add/remove columns to your preferences, then click on the disk 💾 next to the + to save your edits.

When saving or editing layouts you can choose to include filters and sorting preferences as well as the column sizes.

To mark a layout as favorite, open up the layout selector, hover over the layout you want to mark and click on the appearing star on the right. Now the layout will appear in the favorites section below the default layout.
[Layouts.mov](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_128753f4a70343733bc27817b596158c935ca3a5b0eff74084c5cd09b825cd3d/Layouts.mov.md)

### Filtering

ESU allows you to quickly search text fields within the Worksheet. To do this, use the search bar in the upper right corner of the screen.

ESU additionally offers predefined filters for your convenience. To access these filters, navigate to the upper left corner of the Worksheet screen, and click on the filters button to open a drop-down menu. The following predefined filters are available:

* Completed issues

* Not completed issues

* Over original estimation

* Closed issues with remaining time

You can also reset filters from this same menu.

It's important to note that when you are filtering columns in ESU, it is issue based - that is, only the issue values, not aggregations, will be taken into account.
[Filtering.mov](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_7b9c2a204fe07154107e523e7282bf6390bbcb0599992a4af8f5c5514511a066/Filtering.mov.md)

### Views of Issues

ESU allows you to change your views of different issues, so that you can gain a better understanding of your overall project.

ESU offers the ability to arrange your issues so that you can use collapsing functions to change your views of said issues. To access collapsing functions, navigate to the collapse button in the upper left hand corner of the Worksheet.

Clicking on the collapse button will offer you the ability to collapse all, or expand all. In between those options, you will see how many different levels of issues you have that you can collapse/expand to.

Within a hierarchy view, you will be able to collapse individual levels yourself.

Within a hierarchy view, if you collapse a given hierarchy, it is important to note that only numerical values (time values, story points, etc) within this hierarchy will be aggregated.

To get to the list/hierarchy view, first open up the Worksheet - within the Worksheet you will see buttons in the top right for both the list \& hierarchy view.

Once you're in the hierarchy view (it is on by default), you will be able to see how many levels are in the hierarchy. Collapsing functions only work in the hierarchy view.

ESU offers the ability to navigate up and down between issues so that you can focus on adjusting parts of your hierarchy, one at a time.

To navigate to a parent issue, click on the navigate up button in the upper left corner and select a parent from the drop down menu.

To navigate to a child issue, right click on the issue you want to navigate to and select the option Go-to:'Issue Key'.
[Views of Issues.mov](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_5b202fef178a4de8ee91f007a463f7cf954bddfa8c81b0b5e87022363728eebb/Views%2520of%2520Issues.mov.md)

### Editing

Editable cells appear blue on hover.

To edit, double click on the field (aggregation or not) in the Worksheet, and change it as you wish.
Please note that aggregations can't be edited. When editing a field from a collapsed issue you are editing the issue value.

Inline editing is available for certain column fields, that you can select with the column button, except for the progress bars.

See a list of which fields can be seen, and which can be edited [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/which-fields-can-be-added-to-the-detail-view-edito.md).

To assist you with your editing tasks, ESU supports copy \& paste functionality.

You can either choose to copy \& paste by right clicking on the appropriate fields, or you can select fields with the mouse, then use the keyboard shortcuts (CTRL + C, CTRL + V).

**Examples:**

1. An example of how copy \& paste could be useful, would be that you have the option to copy and paste an assignee to multiple issues in ESU, rather than manually assigning a team member for every issue.

2. Within ESU, you can modify the fix versions using copy \& paste, rather than selecting the version number manually. This process is the same for components....

For an even quicker bulk edit with copy and paste, you can use copy range down. Simply select a field, hover over the bottom right corner of it until you see a cross, hold and drag down to paste the value to other fields. Currently this is only available for date fields and Jira fields like assignee. For number and time fields please use copy \& paste as before.

Within the Worksheet, ESU allows you to create new issues. To create a new issue, click on the plus on the right side of the issue column. Select the project and issue type, write a quick summary and press enter.

On the right is a button where you can open up the issue in the create dialog or cancel.

**JQL Worksheet**

In the JQL Worksheet you're able to edit the JQL directly in this view. Simply click on it at the top, edit it as you need and then save.

# End User License Agreement (EULA)

In this End User License Agreement („EULA") APTIS GmbH \& Co. KG, Mollenackerstraße 24, 47589 Uedem, Germany („APTIS" or „we") regulates the terms and conditions for the use of software applications („Software") by the end user („Customer").

## Scope

These terms and conditions apply exclusively to the use of software that we provide via the Atlassian Marketplace. Supplementary, conflicting or deviating terms and conditions of the customer shall not become part of the contract, even if we do not separately object to their validity.

## License object

The customer is entitled to use software provided by us if he complies with the terms of this EULA. APTIS offers free and paid software. Our software is protected under German copyright law.

Free software may be used by the customer to the extent that we have permitted free use. The customer has no legal claim to support or updates if he uses our software free of charge, e.g. through a voucher issued for promotional purposes. If we offer a free trial version, the customer may use it only once for the specified period of time, multiple use (e.g. by registering with different email addresses) is prohibited.

Paid software can be used by the customer only if and as long as he has purchased an active subscription for it. The provision of other services, for example hosting, installation or customization of software, shall only be performed by us on the basis of an express written agreement with the customer.

The software provided by us may not be usable independently, but complements products of Atlassian (e.g. Jira). The software may and can therefore only be used together with Atlassian products of a certain version. The compatible versions of various products can be looked up on our product page in the Atlassian Marketplace. We do not guarantee that our apps will be compatible with future versions of Atlassian products.

## Subscriptions

Support and the purchase of updates and further developments require the conclusion of a paid subscription. We only offer such subscriptions to entrepreneurs, i.e. persons or partnerships who act in the exercise of their commercial or independent professional activity.

Contracts are concluded via the Atlassian Marketplace by the customer selecting the desired subscription and going through the ordering process in full. Until the order is completed, the customer can change his selection at any time using the available buttons. Atlassian will confirm receipt of the order on our behalf immediately by e-mail.

## Right of use

The use of software is limited to the purchased number of users and instances. APTIS grants the customer a simple, non-transferable right of use limited to the term of the concluded subscription.

The Customer may install and run the software on one server instance. For the use of a paid software on multiple server instances, the customer must purchase one subscription per instance. The customer may not rent, lend or otherwise sublicense the software without prior written permission. He may not publicly reproduce or make it available, either by wire or wireless means, or otherwise make it available to third parties, either for a fee or free of charge, e.g. by way of application service providing or as „software as a service".

Duplication of the software is permitted insofar as this is necessary for contractual use of the software and for making a backup copy. Unless otherwise agreed, only one productive instance may be installed per purchased license.

Except as otherwise expressly permitted, the customer shall not, nor allow any other person to reverse engineer, disassemble or create derivatives of the Software. Decompilation of software is only permitted to the extent permitted by law (§ 69e UrhG). In addition, the customer shall not, nor allow others to, attempt to export the source code of the Software, or decode or modify the Software or any part of the Software or the services that it provides.

Copyright notices, serial numbers and other features serving to identify the program may not be removed or changed from the software.

The customer is obligated to provide appropriate security measures to protect the software from unauthorized duplication or use. The customer must keep license keys secret. Disclosure to unauthorized third parties is not permitted.

## Support

APTIS provides support to customers with an active paid subscription only, provided that the agreed fees are paid. Support is provided only for our software and not for Atlassian products. We do our best to respond to support requests in a timely manner. Nevertheless, the customer cannot expect a specific response time and we are not liable for any damages that occur because of a claimed delay in responding to a support request. Support requests should only be sent by email to [support@aptis-solutions.com](mailto:support@aptis-solutions.com).

Support requests including bug fixing are handled during the following business hours: at working days 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (CET/CEST). Working days are from Monday to Friday, with the exception of holidays in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and additionally the 24th and 31st of December.

APTIS will announce to the customer by e-mail and on the website <https://aptis-solutions.com/en/contact/> with a notice period of one week if support requests are not processed for a period of up to two weeks. Information by e-mail requires that the customer has subscribed to the e-mail list at <https://aptis-solutions.com/en/contact/> .

## Error handling

APTIS will fix errors in the software in accordance with the following regulations for customers who have taken out a paid subscription. An error exists if the software does not fulfill a function specified in its description or does not fulfill it correctly or does not behave in a functionally appropriate manner in any other way.

Errors are to be reported by the customer immediately in writing. The customer shall support APTIS in the investigation and elimination of errors within the scope of what is reasonable. In particular, the customer shall immediately provide APTIS with a written description of the error and, upon request, provide other data and protocols that are suitable for analyzing the error

APTIS will make its best efforts to process and correct errors within the following times, but does not guarantee this. The times given are indicative but not binding.

The response time and the time to fix the error depends on the category of the error. Errors are divided according to the following categories:

* Critical errors: dangerous, critical situations are created so that the use of the software is prevented.

* Main error: the usability of the software is significantly reduced.

* Minor errors: usability or operation only slightly affected (e.g. translation errors, graphical errors with no effect on the usability of the software).

The response time for critical errors is usually 24 hours during business hours, for main errors usually 48 hours and for minor errors usually 5 days. Response time is the time between the customer reporting the error and APTIS first addressing the report.

Which errors are processed in which order is at the discretion of APTIS. We try to solve critical bugs and major errors promptly and are entitled to offer a work around if a fix can only be done with a new major release.

The elimination of malfunctions and damages caused by incorrect operation or improper handling on the part of the customer, by the influence of third parties or by force majeure is not the subject of this contract. It can be agreed upon in individual cases against separate remuneration. Furthermore, damage and malfunctions caused by environmental conditions at the installation site, by faults or non-performance of the power supply, faulty hardware or other effects for which we are not responsible are not subject of this contract.

The customer is recommended to back up its data regularly and to test whether the software can be executed without errors with the hardware and software available at the customer's site prior to productive operation. The customer should protect hardware and software in particular against unauthorized access by employees or other third parties, viruses, trojans and other malware.

## Data protection

How we handle personal data of our customers is explained in our privacy policy, which can be found at <https://aptis-solutions.com/datenschutz/> .

Support requests are kept in order to be able to trace which statements were made to the customer. The support history is anonymised four years after the end of the contractual relationship and the last support request.

## Limitation of liability

Claims for damages are excluded, with the exception of claims arising from injury to life, limb or health, from guarantees or under the German Product Liability Act, as well as liability for other damages based on an intentional or grossly negligent breach of duty. Furthermore, liability for the breach of obligations, the fulfillment of which is a prerequisite for the proper execution of the contract and on the compliance with which the customer may regularly rely, shall remain unaffected. In the event of simple negligence, we shall be liable for the foreseeable damage typical for the contract, whereby the amount of damages shall be limited to 100% of the annual fees paid by the customer for the respective product.

The aforementioned liability regulations also apply to our employees, subcontractors and other vicarious agents.

## General Provisions

Should any provision of this contract be invalid, this shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions. In this case, the parties shall replace the invalid provision with a valid provision that comes as close as possible to the economic purpose of the invalid provision.

This EULA fully reflects the agreements between the parties. No additional agreements have been made.

We are entitled to make public use of the customer's name and logo as well as statements made by the customer about our software for advertising purposes, unless the customer objects. The customer shall grant us the necessary rights of use to copyrights, name rights, trademark rights and labelling rights for this purpose.

German law shall apply to all disputes arising from this contract. The place of jurisdiction is Düsseldorf (Germany). Mandatory statutory provisions, in particular regarding exclusive jurisdiction, shall remain unaffected.

# Progress bars

## What is an ESU progress bar?

A progress bar is a data visualization of the status of any metric tracked in an issue.

ESU progress bars make it easy for your team to sum up what is happening in issues at a glance.

## Where can you find ESU progress bars?

* [Summary Panel](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel.md)

* [dashboard gadget](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/dashboard-gadget.md)

## Who are ESU progress bars designed for?

Anyone who is involved in managing any sort of program, project or product, in Jira.

We've had positive feedback from project managers, program managers, and product managers who have found ESU progress bars effective when managing timelines and budgets.

The most valuable part of ESU for managers is the ability to see more than one performance metric in the [Summary Panel](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel.md). And to be able to quickly readjust values in the [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md) that opens with a click on the progress bars.

Developers, UX designers, product marketers and other people within the project teams have also reported a positive impact from ESU. People in project teams benefit from the simple displays of their progress.

## Where did the idea for progress bars come from?

Our founder, Andreas Haaken is a gamer and a project manager. As a Jira user, he became frustrated with the inability to track the progress of issues inside epics - without clicking into every issue.

Andreas wanted to see how much time and budget had been spent at a glance.

Taking inspiration from the health bars in gaming, Andreas devised visual progress bars for Jira project management. He developed the tool with our team and ESU was born.

## How do the progress bars work?

Providing that a metric is tracked in an epic, you are able to configure a progress bar. Every time an issue event is updated, ESU updates the progress bar value. We have built algorithms to calculate summaries, as fast as possible. As a result, you will have the most accurate and up to date information on progress bars.

ESU progress bars can be used in the following structures:

* Epics

* Advanced Roadmaps/Plans

* ESU containers

## Types of ESU progress bars

* time

  * custom

* status category

* completed issues

* numerical

  * story points

  * custom

* calculated

* expression

### Time progress bar

**What is a time progress bar?**

Time progress bars track Jira worklog values against issue time estimates. As a result, users can visualise the amount of time spent on any epic, at a glance - in the Summary Panel.
![Time Progress Bars.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_e98233a7b0aa9b863bc28f799c3070617c09e06ed83e60cad8692f54bcdfc856/Time%20Progress%20Bars.png?cb=8f47621a0b26a3814a810610369ec9be)

**Interpreting time progress bars**

**Grey**indicates the estimated time, not yet spent.

**Green** indicates the time spent within the estimation.

**Red**indicates time spent outside estimation.

**Light red** indicates the remaining time is over the estimated. Typically configured halfway through a project.

**White** indicates "won time" which indicates less remaining estimate than time spent to original estimate. This only occurs when you manually reset the remaining estimate.

**No color**indicates time left between original estimate and the time budget.

The numbers below the progress bar indicate the hours spent on time and budget, based on the configuration settings.

**How to configure a time progress bar**

No custom configuration is required on installation. You can customise the time progress bar to meet your project needs. Learn more [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/progress-bar-configuration.md).

### Custom time progress bar

**What is a custom time progress bar?**

Time progress bars track Jira worklog values against issue time estimates. As a result, users can visualise the amount of time spent on any epic, at a glance - in the Summary Panel.

The custom time progress bar allows users to use their own values for time tracking. You can select your own Jira time fields for the estimated, remaining \& time spent.
![Custom Time Progress Bar.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_14723821fa501519e4411591a64b1f20affdafe6a837d25125ececdfad022f45/Custom%20Time%20Progress%20Bar.png?cb=9a804d549c0008093b69d7c26bdfd691)

### Expression progress bars

**What is an expression progress bar?**

Visualize Jira expressions as a progress bar, based on resolved and unresolved issues.

**Interpreting expression progress bars**

Similar to custom numerical progress bars, issues get weight by the value.

**Green** marks resolved.

**Grey** marks not resolved.

**How to configure an expression progress bar**

Select a template or write your own custom expression.

A library of example use cases can be found [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/expression-customization-guide.md).

## Budgets for progress bars

You can add a budget marker to the following progress bars:

* time

  * custom

* numerical

  * story points

  * custom

* calculated

* expression

If the value goes over budget the progress bars turns red or light red, depending on the estimation or resolved state of the issue.

A detailed guide on how to add a budget marker to progress bars can be found [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/how-to-add-a-budget-marker.md).

# Expression customization guide

## What are Jira Expressions?

Jira Expressions are custom rules you can create to interact with and get information from Jira. They allow you to write specific conditions to find, filter, and manipulate data within Jira.

## What can you track using expressions?

With the power of expressions you can now visualize almost anything as a progress bar or a counter. Thanks to the full power of customization the potential use cases are endless.

Our expression counters show the total amount of results based on your calculation. This can be a number of issues, all of the comments of all the child issues and more.

Our expression progress bars will visualize the chosen calculation and let you compare it based on resolved/unresolved issues. This comparison is an ESU default progress bar setting and can't be changed.

## How can you build your own expressions?

Because Jira expressions use JavaScript-like syntax, getting started with Jira expressions is easier when you're already familiar with JavaScript.

However, it is not a necessity because Jira expressions are designed to be simple enough to use for non-developers.

Once you know a few basic building blocks you can easily build your own simple expressions and only ask your admin or [Solution Partner](https://epicsumup.com/partners/) for help, when it comes to more complex expressions.

Here are some of the most commonly used building blocks:

**Variables and Fields:** Jira Expressions let you access and use the fields of issues, like issue.assignee, issue.status, or issue.dueDate. For issue properties the structure is always issue.property and there are many more options available. A list of properties can be found here: <https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/jira/platform/jira-expressions-type-reference/>

**Operators:** You can use operators to compare values (==, !=, \<, \>) or perform logical operations (\&\&, \|\|).

**Functions:** There are built-in functions you can use, like issue.comments.size() to get the number of comments on an issue.

More information about expressions can be found on the Atlassian Developer blog: <https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/jira/platform/jira-expressions/#syntax-and-semantics>

In case this is too complex in the beginning we provide a few templates InApp that need no to little configuration. All templates that need very little configuration are also listed below.
Have an expression you'd like to see added? Share your suggestions with us --- we're continuously expanding both this template library and the one available in the app.

## Template library

Below we've grouped the different expression elements into various colors that will appear in the templates as well. All placeholders are marked with $ and {} e.g. placeholder : issue.${storyPointFieldId} turns into issue.customfield10100.

### Counter templates

💡
Use the custom progress format to write down what you're tracking e.g. 10h

#### Issues with an upcoming due date

*Expression:* !issue.resolution \&\& issue.dueDate \&\& issue.dueDate.minusDays(2) \<= new CalendarDate()

This expression counts how many issues are unresolved and have a due date that's coming up in the next two days.

If two days is not a fitting timeline for you, you can easily adjust the number of days by changing the number 2 to any number of days you prefer.

#### Original estimate exceeded

*Expression:* (issue.originalEstimate ?? 0) \> (60\*60\*4) \&\& (issue.timeSpent ?? 0) \>= (issue.originalEstimate \* 1.5)

This expression counts how many issues have an original estimate of over 4h and have exceeded their original estimate by 50% or more.

If you want to remove the 4h benchmark, you will need to remove the first half of the expression. Everything up to and including \&\&. Alternatively you can replace the 4 in (60\*60\*4) with a number of hours suitable to you.

To adjust how much the original estimate has to be exceeded you will need to adjust the factor from 1.5 to e.g. 1.75 to change it to 75%.

#### Time spent by user group

*Expression:* issue.worklogs.filter((worklog) =\> worklog.author.groupIds.includes('${userGroup}')).reduce((timeSpent, worklog) =\> timeSpent + (worklog.timeSpent / 60 / 60), 0)

This expression counts the time spent in hours of a specific user group.

In order for this expression to work, you have to fill in the id of the user group. This id is only accessible to admins.

### Progress bar templates

#### Hours per story points

*Expression (simple):* (issue.${storyPointFieldId} ?? 0) \* 3

*Expression (complex):* (issue.${storyPointFieldId} ?? 0) \<=5 ? (issue.${storyPointFieldId} ?? 0) \* 2 : issue.${storyPointFieldId} \* 3

This expression shows how much time will be needed to complete the number of story points in your hierarchy.

In order for this expression to work you will need to fill in the custom field id for the story point field of your instance. When you add a custom expression in ESU you will be able to access all custom field ids and directly add them to the expression in the editor.

Please keep in mind that this is not a best practice and generally not recommended. If you want to use this expression you will need to modify the factor (right now 3) to the individual factor of your team.

#### Custom numerical progress bar for specific issue types

*Expression:* ${issueTypes}.includes(issue.issueType.id) ? issue.${numberFieldId} : 0

*Example:*\[10001\].includes(issue.issueType.id) ? issue.customfield_20101 : 0

This expression visualizes a numerical value for a specific issue type. The progress is counted by issues resolved and unresolved. This is a default ESU progress bar setting and can't be changed.

In order for this expression to work both the ${issueTypes} and the custom field id for the number field you want to track must be filled in.

A common example would be to track the story points only for the issue type stories.

The issue type id is accessible via the Rest API.

#### **Custom numerical progress bar for standard level issue types**

*Expression:* issue.issueType.hierarchyLevel == 0 ? issue.${storyPointFieldId} : 0

This expression visualizes a numerical metric for standard level issue types. No subtasks or parent issue types will be taken into account. The progress is counted by issues resolved and unresolved. This is a default ESU progress bar setting and can't be changed.

In order for this expression to work you will need to fill in the id of the custom field you want to track. This can be story points, business value or any other numerical value you are tracking.

#### Personnel costs

*Expression:* (((issue.timeSpent ?? 0) + (issue.remainingEstimate ?? 0)) / 60 / 60) \* ${hourlyRate}

This expression visualizes time spent and remaining estimate multiplied with your company's hourly rate.

In order for this expression to work you will need to fill in your custom hourly rate or alternatively use a custom field e.g. (((issue.timeSpent ?? 0) + (issue.remainingEstimate ?? 0)) / 60 / 60) \* 50

In case you prefer a simpler solution you can do the same calculation using our [calculated progress bar](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md).

#### Overall costs

*Expression:* (((issue.timeSpent ?? 0) + (issue.remainingEstimate ?? 0)) / 60 / 60) \* 80 + (issue.${additionalExpensesFieldId} ?? 0)

This expression visualizes the total costs spent for the issue you're currently viewing and its children. Including personnel costs (time spent + remaining estimate \* hourly rate) and any additional costs like invoices etc. Additional costs will have to be filled into a custom field.

In order for this expression to work you will need to fill in your company's hourly rate and the custom field id for your additional cost custom field.

# FAQ

## Resolution vs Status category

The Jira properties resolution and status category Done of an issue are not the same and tracked differently by ESU. Below will be explained which progress bar uses what and how.

### Status category

The status category is tracked by our status category progress bar. It visualises how many issues are To Do, In Progress and Done.

### Resolution

The resolution status of an issue is tracked by two of our progress bars: completed issues and custom numerical ones.

The completed issues progress bar visualises the number of issues resolved vs unresolved. What's important to note here is that the workflow status Done is not the same as resolved. Both are different properties but can be linked to each other.

The custom numerical progress bars visualise issues resolved vs unresolved, weighted by the value of your choice (e.g. story points, business value etc).

If any of these progress bars show issues unresolved but with a Done workflow status you can check this [Jira configuration](https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/configure-statuses-resolutions-and-priorities/).

## Dark mode support

ESU supports both light and dark mode and integrates seamlessly with your Jira design settings.

## Data residency

ESU is hosted on the Atlassian Forge platform and a part of the Runs on Atlassian program. This means that all data is contained within Atlassian infrastructure while leaving you in full control of your data egress.

Being a part of this program also means that ESU offers data residency. The app data will automatically be hosted in the same region you choose to host your Atlassian products.

These criteria are checked by Atlassian.

# First steps with ESU

## How to install ESU

The full installation process takes less than 3 minutes. We've built an auto-configuration so that you and your team can gain immediate value from installing ESU.

There are two ways in which you can install ESU to your Jira Instance

1. The Atlassian Marketplace

2. Inside Jira

## How to install ESU from the Atlassian Marketplace

Visit [++https://marketplace.atlassian.com/++](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/) and search for ESU in the search bar. It will be the first app on the list. You can also visit ESU on the Marketplace directly [here](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1213091/epic-sum-up-lean-project-management-for-jira-teams?hosting=cloud&tab=overview).

Try it for free. Start by selecting your hosting. ESU is available for Cloud, Server or Data Center. Next click Start free trial. You can request for ESU to be installed by your Jira Admin if you do not have the permissions to install new apps.

No credit card details are required to trial the app. Once you have completed your evaluation you can choose to remain on the subscription or remove it from your Jira instance.

## How to install ESU from your Jira Instance

Navigate to the top right-hand setting icon. Navigate to Jira Apps. Search for ESU. Navigate to the app and click try it for free. ESU will be added to your Jira instance.

Now that you have ESU installed, it's time to start using it.

## Setting up ESU

Once ESU is installed it automatically configures progress bars in the Summary Panel for Jira epics.

1. Time

2. Status category

3. Comments

4. Attachments

**As an administrator, you can also view these configured settings in the global settings.**

Learn how to [configure ESU as an administrator](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/administrator-start-guide-to-epic-sum-up.md).

## Viewing ESU Summary Panels

Summary Panels are viewable in the issue view on epics upon installation. The Summary Panel can be found on the right side of the issue view. You can also add it to other issue types as well.

[Learn more about the different views of Summary Panels](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md)

### Upon installation ESU automatically adds the following

* web panel to configurable issue types, initially only to epics

* JQL Worksheet button to JQL search

* filter result grid gadget for dashboards

* issue, project and global configuration for the app

* new custom field container link

* new custom field type time duration

**Now ESU is ready for use.**

# How to add a budget marker

## Company-managed projects

### Add field

To set a budget for any progress bar you need to create the custom field you want to use first.

For time budgets the **(ESU) Time**field needs to be used. This way you can differentiate between time formats (e.g. 8h 30m or 3d 2h 15m).

For numerical budgets you can use the **Number Field**.

Once the field is created, add it to the necessary screens.
![Number field.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_075641f5134b143f2ab907ff61a8507141d4be33f3e79f5a5a3cd32efc3f5e15/Number%20field.png?cb=e009a558026e0ba335cd87ff545d855b)

### Assign as budget

In the [Summary Panel configuration](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md) navigate to the related progress bar and set the field as budget in the drop down menu. Depending on your configuration set up you can do this globally, per issue type or on a project basis.
![Budget.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_326f31f510965b10643b37ebc97a51a36e489eb4459f5c011426440356ffb4eb/Budget.png?cb=633bc88f74682ca1f324446f16860be8)

### Add value

In order for the budget to appear on the progress bar, you need to add a value to the field. You can do this in the issue view or [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md).
![Add Budget.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_bc80fc96a45730d52e36ae4beb615a30b276d32332549dd8e8199151d5610df5/Add%20Budget.png?cb=52f28e54dcb2258f69da0b98ff1e2b1b)

## Team-managed projects

### Add field

To set a budget for any progress bar you need to add the field you want to use to the project first. For that navigate to **Project settings** \> **Fields** in your team-managed project. Here you can see the fields that can already be used in this project and add new ones.

For time budgets the **(ESU) Time**field is used. This is a custom field type provided by ESU that can only be used to create custom fields in the global issue configuration.

If you already have a global **(ESU) Time**custom field in your instance to use in your company-managed projects, you can find it in this list.
![Add fields to team-managed projects.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_89972490e2d43c777533d11d336fb2b1cd1ebf6fa2d695a993c97f783097cec1/Add%20fields%20to%20team-managed%20projects.jpg?cb=81abca745b06dae3c9dcc3575b126208)

If no budget field is available, please contact your administrator to create one for you or create your own **Short Text**field as a placeholder.

For numerical budgets like story points you need to create a new **Number** field.

After you have added/created the fields, navigate to **Project settings** \> **Issue types**and add the fields to every issue type that should have a budget.

### Assign as budget

In the Summary Panel **project** configuration navigate to the related progress bar and set the field as budget in the drop down menu.
Please note that you need to switch on the customizable project configuration first.
![Budget.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_326f31f510965b10643b37ebc97a51a36e489eb4459f5c011426440356ffb4eb/Budget.png?cb=633bc88f74682ca1f324446f16860be8)

### Add value

In order for the budget to appear on the progress bar, you need to add a value to the field first. You can do this in the issue view or [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md).

# How to add the ESU Dashboard Gadget to Confluence Cloud

The ESU Grid Gadget is not supported in Confluence due to its complex technical features. However, there is a workaround on how to display it in Confluence. Follow this step-by-step guide:

1. Create a completely new dashboard

2. Add the ESU Filter Results Grid Gadget to the dashboard

   1. It's important that it is the only gadget on the dashboard

   2. Also make sure that your layout only has one frame

3. Configure the gadget to your needs and save it

4. In the top right corner of the dashboard, open the "..." Menu, select "View as wallboard" and copy the URL

   1. It should look something like <https://yourcloud.atlassian.net/jira/dashboards/wallboard?dashboardId=10001>

5. Open the Confluence page where you want to display the ESU Filter Results Grid Gadget and go into edit mode

6. Click on "+", click "View more"

![Insert & View more.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_f798c9bcf0dbad7f48aace417856a7cebeeb26357a043a077af6ae9626f89dd5/Insert%20&%20View%20more.png?cb=02874289b369b69b0a86bdce94a7d539)

7. Search for "Iframe," select it, and click "Insert" (bottom right corner)

8. In the URL field, enter the wallboard URL copied previously and adjust remaining settings (width and height) of the Iframe

![Screenshot 2024-02-20 165537.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_7077fdf4fdf28710691ed30a208aed59e7ab507e0cacd2f5981bab444b03cffa/Screenshot%202024-02-20%20165537.png?cb=b4d594887d156da48fb57a839fc3b056)
Just an example

9. Save/Update

You should now see gadget on your Confluence page.

Please keep in mind that some functionality working in Jira might not work as expected in Confluence (e.g. Opening the Worksheet doesn't work).

If you run into any issues, please [contact our support team](https://jira.aptis.info/plugins/servlet/desk/portal/8).

# Integrations of ESU

ESU is a highly versatile app that integrates with a range of apps from the Atlassian Marketplace. On this page we will give you an overview over all compatible apps, as well as describing the overlapping use cases.

If there's an integration you're missing, please contact our team at esu@aptis.support and we will look into possible solutions.

## Timesheets by Tempo - Jira Time Tracking

The account and team fields from [Timesheets by Tempo](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/6572/timesheets-by-tempo-jira-time-tracking?hosting=cloud&tab=overview) can be added to the Worksheet.

## Timetracker - Time Tracking \& Reporting for Jira

The ESU scope from the Worksheet can be send to the [Timetracker](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211243/timetracker-time-tracking-reporting-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview) using the Send to button in the bottom left corner. This export option is marked with the Timetracker logo.

## Email This Issue

Emails added as comments by [Email this Issue](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/4977/email-this-issue?hosting=cloud&tab=overview) can be accessed from the ESU Comment Overview. This makes it easier to search for specific emails.

If you'd like to learn more about this use case, [download our whitepaper Jira as project inbox today](https://go.aptis-solutions.com/jira-as-project-inbox).

## Smart Fields for Jira

The fields created by [Smart Fields](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1227484/smart-fields-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview) can be viewed in our Worksheet.

At the moment the fields can't be used in the Summary Panel. This feature will be implemented in a later version.

## Deep Clone for Jira

Using the 'Show issue in' button in the Worksheet you can access the [Deep Clone](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1218652/deep-clone-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview) integration. If you click on 'Deep Clone for Jira' all of your issues will be sent to the Bulk Clone function. Here your filter will be already preset to the hierarchy you had in ESU. Now you just need to select where the issues need to be cloned to and the cloning process can start.

Read more about how to bulk clone issues in the [++Deep Clone documentation++](https://documentation.codefortynine.com/deep-clone-for-jira/bulk-clone).

# Cloud Migration Guide

ESU can be migrated using the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA).
To access this functionality, please make sure that you have the latest ESU versions installed. At least Data Center version 4.5.2 and Cloud version 4.3.

## What to do

Using the migration assistant, the migration path is straight forward:

1. Install the app on Cloud

2. Mark the app as "Needed in Cloud" in the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant

3. Run the migration (potentially in a test-environment) and check the "App migration" section of your migration for any messages and/or warnings

These messages and/or warnings may include notes about Data Center only features (if you're using them) that can't be migrated to the Cloud automatically or at all. For more details about which features are available in Cloud, take a look at our [feature matrix](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/feature-matrix.md) or see what configurations are migrated below.
![:question_mark:](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_931d4224cf7c9f8baf9ec582647d4a81933763fa3e43fe971908806df7e4e5a9/atlassian-question_mark?cb=01451d3e8ed02077899ec3e8fa8cf364)
If you are unsure about any of the messages, [reach out to our support team](https://aptis-workspace.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/4).

Additionally you may want to check if and how you're using ESU dashboard gadgets, as they are not migrated automatically and have to be re-configured manually on Cloud. You can use the "Manage Apps" - "App usage" section on Data Center to get an overview of the usage.

## What will be migrated

### Configurations

If any fields that are part of any of the configurations are not migrated, you will not be able to see them in the Summary Panel.

1. These can be [budget fields](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/how-to-add-a-budget-marker.md) which will lead progress bars to appear without a budget.

2. Or [custom numerical progress bars](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md) will not be shown in the Summary Panel.

#### Issue configuration

When you select a project for the migration, all the configurations made on the individual issues within that project will be migrated with it.

All permission configurations will be migrated.

### Containers

If you migrate your entire instance simultaneously, no extra steps are required. Containers will be included in the automatic migration process.

In case you're doing a project by project migration, container links between already migrated projects and not yet migrated projects will break temporarily.

Once all projects are migrated, the links can be reinstated.

Please [contact our support team](https://aptis-workspace.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/4) for further instructions.

### Dashboard gadgets

At the moment, dashboard gadgets won't be migrated automatically. They have to be re-configured manually after the migration has been completed.

## FAQ

### Data residency

ESU is a Runs on Atlassian app. This means that it will automatically have the same data residency region as your Jira.

Learn more about Runs on Atlassian here:

<https://www.atlassian.com/blog/developer/runs-on-atlassian-now-available>

### Licensing

When moving from Server / Data Center to Cloud (or vice versa) you will need new licenses, as the respectable licenses are treated differently within the Atlassian Marketplace.

You can learn more about Atlassian's licensing here:

<https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/marketplace#general-faqs>

If you still have any questions you can [reach out to our support](https://aptis-workspace.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/4). We're happy to help.

# Most common use cases

## Basic use cases

**Tracking projects time progress**

To track the time progress of projects with simple progress bars was one of the main reasons we developed ESU in 2015. And it's still one of the most popular use cases.

The time progress bar reflects the estimated, spent and remaining time within a project hierarchy. If needed, a time budget can be added as well.

These progress bars can be used in the Summary Panel to track progress from the issue view or on the dashboard gadget to keep track of multiple projects at one glance.

Learn more about this use case in our video below.
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_tLH2zyNoQ>

You can learn more about the time progress bar [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md).

**Tracking epic progress with story points**

With ESU you can track the progress of an epic with story points. In one progress bar you can visualize the issues resolved vs issues unresolved, weighted by story points.

These progress bars can be used in the Summary Panel to track progress in the issue view or on the dashboard gadget to keep track of multiple epics at once.

You can learn more about the story points progress bar [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md).

**Finding comments or attachments with ESU**

With ESU you get a comment as well as an attachment counter to help you find things quicker.

These counters can be used in the Summary Panel. They sum up all the comments/attachments within the hierarchy. By clicking on them a related overview opens up. Here you can use the search bar to find specific comments or attachments. And to help with difficult file names the Attachment Overview also comes with a preview gallery.

You can learn more about the summary counters [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-counts.md).

## Configuration necessary

**Dashboard gadget to track time and story point progress at a glance**

Using the ESU dashboard gadget you can track the progress of multiple projects, initiatives or epics in one view. With the metrics of your choice like time, story points and more.

From here every time you need to check in with the progress, you can just go to the dashboard, check all the progress bars and if something isn't as its supposed to be you can click on the progress bar and have a look through the details. This view is called the [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md). Once you've finished your analysis here, you can close it and jump to the next project.

Learn how to configure the dashboard gadget [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/dashboard-gadget.md).

**Tracking personnel costs with a calculated progress bar**

Using a simple calculated progress bar from ESU you can keep track of personnel costs per consulting project, epic or anywhere else you need to.

You need one custom field where you can put in the hourly rate and then you can configure a calculated progress bar to calculate time spent \* hourly rate automatically.

The detailed guide on how to configure a calculated progress bar can be found [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md).

**Tracking business value**

There are a lot of possibilities on how and with what metrics you want to track your progress. ESU supports the most common ones like time or story points but you can also use your own metrics.

Business value is one of the metrics we've seen customers track a lot.

To track it with ESU you first need to create a custom field for it and then add it as a progress bar within the Summary Panel configuration.

You can learn more about how this works [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md).

**Calculating the average time per story point**

Knowing the average time spent per story point can be good for estimating the personnel costs of future development projects.

The calculation is story points / time spent, which you can configure in the [Summary Panel configuration](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md).

**Cost estimation for personnel costs**

Estimation is always time consuming but the more metrics you need to estimate the longer it takes. With this progress bar personnel cost estimation just got easier.

When you configure a calculated progress bar like this: Original estimate \* hourly rate, ESU will automatically calculate the estimated costs for this project. This way you have estimated costs automatically together with time. And you can take it into consideration when setting your cost budget for the project.

Learn more about calculated progress bars [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/epic-sum-up-progress-bars.md).

# Progress bar configuration

The following configurations apply for these progress bars

* time

  * custom

* status category

* completed issues

* numerical

  * story points

  * custom

* calculated

You can see a preview of your configurations next to the progress bar name.

To copy a progress bar configuration, click on the copy icon on the right side. To paste a progress bar configuration, click on 'Add field' and then select 'Paste copied field from clipboard' right from the top of the menu.

This is mainly for transferring settings across configurations e.g. from one project to another.
Please note that the time, status category and completed issues progress bars can't be in a Summary Panel twice.

## The data input configuration

By changing the data input for each progress bar, you can customise which data is displayed on the progress bars. Epics/containers and sub-tasks can be toggled "on" or "off", from the progress bar settings.

You will see two of the following options to configure

* Include epics configuration

* Include sub-task configuration

Learn more about each option below.
![toggles cloud.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_4daa3177b32a0255224a64addfbd280d11b668f993abe34a92e05de5f3f57601/toggles%20cloud.png?cb=b9571db19b2a1aef3aa402e008102a9f)

### Include epics configuration

When the "include epics" configuration is toggled "on" ESU will calculate all of the issues within an epic or container.

If this configuration is deactivated the top level epic or container will be excluded from progress bar calculations.

### Include sub-task configuration

When the "include sub-tasks" configuration is toggled "on" ESU will include all sub-tasks within epics in the calculation. If this configuration is deactivated all related sub-tasks will be excluded from progress bar calculations. Please note that from the calculation excluded sub-tasks won't be shown in the [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md).
Please note that the default setting for data samples includes epics/containers and sub-tasks.

## Progress bar description

Define a custom progress bar description.

## Default Worksheet column layout

![Pgb defautl layout config.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_3e0f67be4e24b42b22bc3a63ba40e67a5421918294eb8bf649f883f82008051d/Pgb%20defautl%20layout%20config.jpg?cb=60aae656274eab8330fcdb57bfdfe732)

The default Worksheet column layout provides you with the ability to customize the view that you see first. You can choose from all the global layouts you have set.

The Worksheet is the visualization presented when you click on the progress bar, which is where you estimate times e.g. You can choose from a wide range of different fields and values to create global templates to make things easier for your team to configure progress bars.

Learn more about Worksheet layouts [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md).

## Progress format configuration

There are two different options to configure the display of the progress format:

### Standard options

The progress format configuration allows you to customize the display text underneath the progress bar. It may vary depending on the type of progress bar you are configuring.

For all custom numerical and calculated there are four standard options available:

1. Resolved/Total

2. x% (Resolved/Total)

3. Resolved / Budget

4. x% (Resolved / Budget)

Completed issues only has the first two.

The progress format for the status category progress bar is non configurable.

Time has more options available that can be found further down this page.
![Pgb progress format config options.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_0dd980f8d36180180940b497323ca3ffccf81c7ce0bc3dbc900edd32ab994ba1/Pgb%20progress%20format%20config%20options.jpg?cb=23fb8c9ca6e40198b73c237ec252da03)

### Custom options

To further customize the display text, click on the pencil next to the drop down menu.

Now you can use our provided placeholders and UTF-8 icons to fully customise the display of your progress bar texts.
![Pgb format custom config.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_b67c977232f9ac5a7de3953c330d3c08ba807556a7e4b3ee7484b5be8b991714/Pgb%20format%20custom%20config.jpg?cb=02f8e36dd7dee80f5486c2b37bd5ecd5)

## Budget marker configuration

The budget configuration on progress bars activates a black indicator that will appear on your progress bar. The budget indicator will map how much budget you have spent, in comparison to the total budget estimated.
![Pgb budget config.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_4c351b1e31389e724a8f620fe873c3a4e4030c1585e63c3fe0c519ebe35d24db/Pgb%20budget%20config.jpg?cb=9739b571b9a73868e5dce8795d7dbb00)

Budget configuration is possible for the following progress bars:

* time

  * custom

* numerical

  * story points

  * custom

* calculated

* expression

To add a budget marker to a progress bar you need to create a custom field first. Learn more [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/how-to-add-a-budget-marker.md).

## Configurations for the time progress bar

Please note that the following configurations are only applicable to time progress bars
![Time progress bar config.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_a54ae0319acd3eceacad74e8176f0cd092ac1c90410a5273fe2ac698c6eb9a58/Time%20progress%20bar%20config.png?cb=e281fcba417da8015cd8778cecbeee52)

**Formatting time values under the time progress bar**

There are six options for formatting time progress bars:

1. Time spent / Estimated

2. x% (Time spent / Original estimate)

3. Time Spent / Total / Remaining

4. Time spent / Estimated / Remaining

5. Time spent / Time budget / Remaining

6. x% (Time spent / Time budget)

**Time spent** is a summary of the total logged time

**Remaining time** is a summary of time estimated, minus the time spent.

**Estimated** is a summary of estimated time

**Time budget** is a summary of the time budget set.

**Total**is a summary of the time spent and remaining time.

**Ignore remaining time configuration**

To ensure the accuracy of the time remaining on time progress bars you can switch on the ignore remaining time configuration. When toggled on ESU automatically ignores remaining time associated with closed issues.
Please note that this is switched off by default.

To change this configuration, click on the time progress bar, in the Summary Panel and toggle on the "Ignore remaining time for closed issues" configuration.

## Configurations for the custom time progress bar

All time progress bar configuration options are also available for the custom time progress bar.

Within the custom time progress bar configuration, the first step is to name the progress bar. Then you can select time custom fields for the time estimation, time remaining and time spent.

Additionally, there are two options provided by ESU.

**Calculated remaining time:**

original estimate - time spent

**Ignore original estimate/Total:**

Remaining time + time spent

One example would be:

1. Time spent → Time spent (imported)

2. Time estimated → Original estimate

3. Time remaining → Calculated remaining time (provided by ESU)

![DC Custom Time Progress Bar.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_2fbad9531b92590f0af754d95d847204701dfe006b658559b3e3d7e38dee7ac9/DC%20Custom%20Time%20Progress%20Bar.png?cb=72122c617aaa100e52a9cb62dbe13dd7)

## Calculated progress bar configuration

Simply select two custom field values with an operator to perform the calculation required for the progress bar.
![Calculated Progress Bar Config.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_358fba8e14657606c5d468e10ff86906fcbb874e7c8ab25868a1efb6c55c6442/Calculated%20Progress%20Bar%20Config.png?cb=c420001604470250767846ca446ed2b3)

ESU supports all Jira custom fields plus fields from other tools such as Jira Workflow Toolbox (JWT).

Four operators are available in ESU including

* multiply (\*)

* addition (+)

* minus (-)

* divide (/)

The two values on either side of the operator can be selected from any pre-configured field.

There is also the option to select a custom value. When a custom value is selected users can add any static number into the calculation.

Custom value based calculations are useful for building progress bars which e.g. visualize the personnel cost progress. In this case, the custom value is equal to the personnel hourly rate.

As a result, you'll never lose track of your project spend.

## Expression progress bar configuration

Select a template or start from scratch with the 'Custom' option.

Customize the selected template, add a custom expression from the [template library](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/expression-customization-guide.md) or build your own custom expression from scratch.

Define which columns should appear in the Worksheet.

# Counters

## What are Counters?

Counters are small indicators that can be added to the Summary Panel. Counters sum up all values of a specific kind within a hierarchy. At the moment there are counters for attachments, comments, flags and links available.

Additionally, using expressions, you can define your own counters.

They are clickable and open a related [Worksheet](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/detail-view-editor.md). For comments and attachments the [related overview](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/counter-overviews.md) will open.

![Counters.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_927611054d749d572f72e99b7bf469e8779bde916058f533ab1e11a3944fed5d/Counters.png?cb=6945379ba1299450eb829765437ade3f)

## What are the benefits of counters?

ESU allows you to easily find attachments, comments, flags and links within hierarchies, using counters.

Expression counters allow you to count specfic values within a hierarchy. This can be the number of overdue issues or the hours spent by a specific user group or anything else you can think of.

Counters can be used in the following structures:

* Epics

* Advanced Roadmaps

* ESU containers

One benefit of ESU, is that when using counters, it is easier to find comments -- compared to using Jira default search.

Additionally, when emails are added as comments, you can find them quickly \& easily.

Learn more about the benefits of using counter overviews [here.](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/counter-overviews.md)

# Summary Panel

## What is a Summary Panel?

The ESU Summary Panel is a customisable live reporting tool for Jira. The data is live because it's not cached, it's calculated using a live reporting algorithm.

Summary Panels provide a single view for data visualization related to your project. It is on the Summary Panel where users can view which projects are on track, at risk, overtime or outside the budget, at a glance.

No more clicking into single issues to see what is happening inside an epic. Summary Panels solve the "too many clicks" problem for project managers and product managers who manage projects in Jira.

## What's viewable on ESU Summary Panels

On the standard Summary Panel view users will have full visibility of all metrics (progress bars and counters).

Some examples of progress bars include

* time

* story points

# Progress bar views

## Progress bar views

To ensure that ESU works for all users we have designed different ways for you to view your progress bars, while you are working. As a result, you will always be able to see the progress of your projects - at a glance.

We've built ESU to reduce the number of user clicks. Our goal is to give you your time back.

## Standard Summary Panel view

![image-20250520-132341.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_d3ca36b1905c57cbcb2ea9fe37234058d7e10ce138edc6be95167c103154f533/image-20250520-132341.png?cb=a1aa807b23d3526f482c2e8017a0f8fa)

Before you can start configuring the Summary Panel, please ensure all issue types you wish to configure are added to the "Issue types with Summary Panel"
![Issue types with SP DC.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_6124a186c036d7bf09c0527b43d31fcd5e5fa68974dc059dc26e8a65e6e1b539/Issue%20types%20with%20SP%20DC.png?cb=7e2ef352a8bd961269bbf8e64b8cfc51)

## Summary Panel

Please note that each level of configuration will override the previous ones.

**The hierarchy of the Summary Panel configuration is as follows:**

1. Summary Panel global settings

2. Summary Panel global settings per issue type(s)

3. [Summary Panel project settings](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/project-configuration.md)

4. [Individual issue configuration](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/individual-issue-configuration.md)

Now that you understand how all the configurations on ESU work, you can begin customizing your ESU Summary Panels to the needs of your business.

**1. Global settings**

Admins can configure the Summary Panel to show different metrics, depending on the company requirements and preferences. Once this is configured, it will be used as your standard configuration for Summary Panels. You can also customize the Summary Panel configuration on a local project basis, which you can learn more about [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/project-configuration.md).
![image-20251215-095100.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_52171190db67f59aac46d8f843156de5eae89f7f6ce54f001e0efb6c3d98c5f0/image-20251215-095100.png?cb=ae7f8e76700254bc5f471c86469e2030)

**2. Global Settings per issue type(s)**

Provided that you have added all the issue types to the general settings you can customize the Summary Panel global settings for each issue type, individually.

There are no limitations to how many Summary Panels can be configured. Admins can select the issue types to display to the Summary Panels.

All configurations at this level will override the global Summary Panel configuration.

For configuration options of progress bars, you can have a look at [this page](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/progress-bar-configuration.md).
![image-20251215-095207.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_78f81b80616278a05902278938453c9d23670619997c4a29f470d5c61d9ba807/image-20251215-095207.png?cb=80f1c6bd1ff151e2f2db84038a7f819e)

## Containers

**1.Choose which container link type to use**

Select the type of container link you want to be used in your instance. You have the option to choose between the container link custom field which works like the Jira Parent field or regular issue links.

**2.Define work item types as containers**

Define which work item types can be used as containers. Only the work item types set here can become a container parent to other issues or containers.

Depending on which method you chose in step one, follow this guide for setting up the container link field or skip this step onto the next one if you're using work item links.

**3.Add the container link field to screens**

Navigate to the **Work items** \> **Fields**and type 'Container link' into the search bar. Click on the three point menu on the right side and add the field to all screens you need.
![image-20251215-101458.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_6c9eed1c9b04f9a1f23975d2f413c307e39bbe0f718797a2e95799bef5be715a/image-20251215-101458.png?cb=ba6306c8d1fb79850b3995fd10e5d4ab)

And you're done. Users can now use containers. All remaining steps are only for those who want to use work item links.

**3.Create link types**

Navigate to the **Work items** \> **Work item features** \> **Work item linking**to create a work item link type to use for linking containers.
![Issue link for containers.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_86666bfa4110b815e6686011cfadc684f3779878d9eef80d5c142be6078c6fd9/Issue%20link%20for%20containers.jpg?cb=eaa7d0b631bd2a09da4f893f1d4beebd)

**4.Select link types**

You can choose which link type or types users should use to create container structures.

Let's take a look at how users can use this, using the example links: Container Parent and Container Child.
![image-20251215-101707.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_146470ce75ca8c318a373c22fde75fabc5075e24b855b486691baf5a642b9f07/image-20251215-101707.png?cb=13c03fd149d6cd3f6056ae995f438ca4)

The link name refers to what the linked issue is in relation to the issue you are viewing. So if you are using the container parent link, the linked issue will become a parent of the issue you are viewing. And if you are using the container child link, the linked issue will become the child of the issue you are viewing.

You can also switch the direction of the links to have it the other way around. Or allow users to use multiple types of links.

Which link types are used for building containers is currently only viewable in the global configuration. As users can't access this configuration, it is up to the administrator to let users know which link types to use. We are currently working on implementing a solution for users.

# Timesheet

## What is the ESU timesheet?

The timesheet is a useful feature that ESU offers. With ESU, you can quickly and easily generate timesheets that will show you how long each team member spent on each issue.
![Timesheet.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_9a70f32740d97d75cee7062f8f4b69508ad41224d287278f0692c2d7781adffc/Timesheet.jpg?cb=21330831ea506df8d8ce0eaee46e619d)

## What is the value of the timesheet?

Once you create a timesheet, ESU allows you to create a worklog report.

This report will be very useful for managers to assess the performance of individual team members, with different sorting and grouping options, to give you the best view of the data. This data is also useful in assessing how your project is going overall.

## Example use cases

If you are a project manager, you may wish to structure your worklog report in specific ways. For example, if you want to view the worklogs of only the software developers on your team, you could select to view the data for those individuals.

## How to access the ESU timesheet

1. From the Worksheet use the "Show Issues In" button, in the bottom left corner.

2. Click the "Show Issues In" button at the bottom of the Summary Panel.

## Timesheet features

1. **Quickly view worklogs** - view your worklogs in an issue hierarchy, in one view, without having to filter

2. **Group your worklogs**- by default, worklogs are grouped by issue. However, they can also be grouped by author or date.

3. **Select a specific date-range** - create your worklog reports from a calendar. Alternatively, you can use one of the preset options, such as the last month, which are available.

4. **Search for specific data**- in the search bar

5. **Filter for specific individuals**- look up individuals on your team, to view their worklog data

6. **Time aggregation** - View a summary of all times, filter as needed

7. **Add additional columns**- Customize your worklog report

8. **Save layouts** - Create personalized reporting views

9. **Export data** - to **CSV** and **Excel**

## How to create a worklog report

**1.Open timesheet**

Within ESU, go to the Summary Panel on the right hand side of the screen. At the bottom of the Summary Panel, click on the share icon and choose timesheet from the menu to open it up.

**2.Select the date-range of your sheet**

After you have opened the timesheet in ESU, navigate to the calendar All icon. Clicking on this icon will open up a calendar view, from which you can select the date-range of your choice. Alternatively you can select one of the available Presets.
![Worklog report.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_d207315448282aebd74bf55b1447566a4a5b19980fd9d09572f67ee9e17b9967/Worklog%20report.jpg?cb=8cecef2a728e6578cf58b9381fcf650b)

**3.Filter your worklogs to display the information that you wish to report on.**

In the upper left portion of the screen in your worklog report, you will see a Group By dropdown menu. Click on this, and you will see a menu of options which include: Issue, Author, and Worklog Date.

**4.Sort and filter the report using worklog columns of your choice**

You also have the option to sort and filter worklog report data using columns. These columns include: Issue, Author, Comment, Working date, and Spent Time (h). You can also add additional columns if necessary or select a predefined layout.

Within the filter menu for e.g. the Author you can select, or deselect certain team members - this is useful if you want to sort your worklog report to only include specific roles within your team. In order for this menu to appear on the column header, you need to set the grouping option to Group by: None.

**Now you have all the information you need for your report.**

**5.Export your report**

To export your report data, navigate to the bottom left corner of your timesheet. You will see a Show Issues In menu button. Click on the button, and a drop down menu will appear - here you will see options to export your report to Excel or CSV format.

# Version 2.0.26

## General Improvements

In this version we've redesigned a few parts of the UI including our progress bars, summary counters and Summary Panel. Part of this redesign is our new Summary Panel onboarding which gives you a quick overview of all the features.

What you think is important to us which is why we've implemented a new feature request tool where you can raise requests, vote for existing ones and stay up to date with all your requests. We've already added a few popular feature requests so feel free to [vote for your favorites](https://feedback.epicsumup.com/boards/feature-requests).

## Summary Panel \& Progress Bars

### Counter group

Additionally to the new design for our summary counters we've added the ability to group counters. As we plan to add more counters in the future, this allows you to choose which ones you want to add to your Summary Panel without taking up too much space.
![Counter group.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_fe43bf9e2b7ef9c76199a22f4a5a1723c1682eb38feb0e589668a4d6fb20795b/Counter%20group.png?cb=b951e0c7e5f7bf08318f36b1569afd1b)

### Budgets

In this release we've made two budget improvements. First, you can now add a budget to calculated progress bars as well. And second progress bars now turn red/light red after breaking the budget. The depth of the color depends on the resolution of the issues. This works for all progress bars except status category and completed issues as they can't have a budget.

## Detail View Editor

### Issue creation in Detail View Editor

From now on you can create Issues directly from the Detail View Editor.

To create a new issue, click on the plus on the right side of the issue column. Select the issue type first, then type in a summary and to save press enter. The created issue will now appear in the hierarchy.

On the right side you can see the project the issue will be created in, open up the issue in the create dialog or cancel.
![Create Issues.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_628d63e64b9d147fc486cca4d8392c8a0b629142dbeb5c4d0dd14b51c01fead8/Create%20Issues.png?cb=56bc78ba8c3e45ca8c44a763eafd0b9e)

### Navigate between parent and child issues

The larger your hierarchy the more difficult it is to keep track of everything. To make it easier we've implemented the up and down navigation in the Detail View Editor. So you can focus on adjusting parts of your hierarchy, one at a time.

To navigate to a parent issue, click on the navigate up button in the upper left corner and select a parent from the dropdown menu.

To navigate to a child issue, right click on the issue you want to navigate to and select the option Go-to:'Issue Key'.
![Navigate up & down.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_0dcafd0be05743f06dd1f19c56eac19536fd68d5b1370c5ce2fe86d70242717c/Navigate%20up%20&%20down.png?cb=f90aaa112c924a0f1bd19b68481f8880)

### Usability Improvements

**Improved column sorting**

We know how important sorting is to our customers that's why we've extended the ability to sort to even more columns this release.

**Use delete key to empty field**

You can now use the delete key on your keyboard to remove the value in any field that can be edited.

**Edit cells with a sum**

With this new feature you can edit a field value with a summary, without having to expand the hierarchy. While you can now edit this field, it is important to keep in mind that you are still editing the field value and not the summary.

**Filter per sprint**

Now you can also use sprints as a column filter to filter your issues.

**Remember maximized state of the Detail View Editor**

If you always use the Detail View Editor in full size, it will now remember this setting and open up in full size every time. No need to click maximize every time anymore.

## Dashboard Gadget

### JQL autocomplete field

With this new JQL field you can edit your dashboard gadget filter directly from the gadget configuration or define custom JQL when adding a new gadget to your dashboard.

## Container Support

![Container in DVE.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_07f6836c4b8d62100744dd0ec4314995e491555495032f6301fb48aaf82c8d45/Container%20in%20DVE.png?cb=d4be81d3c3b6a472b95f9de763d8bc21)

Containers are now available for Cloud. Similar to Jira epics, Epic Sum Up containers can be parents of other issues.

To start using containers, navigate to the global settings of Epic Sum Up and select the container tab. Here you can choose the issue types that can be used to build container structures. The next step is to define which link types are used to link containers to other issues and vice versa. Read more about the configuration on [this page](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md).

For those who have been using containers on the Server or Data Center version, you might notice that this works differently as to what you are used to. Learn more about this [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/containers.md).

If you want to migrate containers to the cloud, you are now able to do so. The use of the migration assistant is currently not supported but we are preparing to support it in one of the coming versions.

## Layout Favorites

You can now mark a layout as a favorite in the Detail View Editor and it will appear in the 'Favorites' section after the default layout.
![Favourite layouts.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_0ebd8134174c23085f1759029950ecd01a90ad8baf2c52551da08647116751dc/Favourite%20layouts.png?cb=48b39eeb6a6f431ec5568efbb8e2193e)

## Overview Access from Detail View Editor

You can now access the comments and attachments overview from the 'Show Issues in' button in the Detail View Editor.

This speeds up your comment or attachment searching even more, since you can either filter in the Detail View Editor beforehand or even use JQL, then access the Detail View Editor and at last access the comments overview.

## Summary Panel

Two new counters: flags and linked issues can now be added to the Summary Panel. They will both open up a Detail View Editor including the issue, the status and the related field.
![Counters.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_f8bee63294c83c060733728f73f874436487f792ba829c4cd6073dd629de03e6/Counters.png?cb=6945379ba1299450eb829765437ade3f)

## Detail View Editor

In this release we've added several improvements to our Detail View Editor. Let's start with some highlights:

**Column chooser update**

Next to the field name in the column chooser are now icons that indicate the field type. Additionally you can also use the search bar up top to search for field types. Just type in e.g. 'number field' and all the number fields will be shown.

**Editing of status**

The status of issues can now be edited in the Detail View Editor. You can edit it by double clicking on it and you can also copy the transition and paste it onto other issues as well. DONE

**Facts row**

A new functionality we've introduced to the Detail View Editor is the facts row. It's a row that is at the bottom, just above the 'Show issue in' and 'Close' button. Here all the values from the fields you select will be summed up.

**Copy range down**

Copy range down is now available for Jira fields like date and assignee. Simply select a field, move your cursor to the bottom right corner and drag down. Number and time fields will be supported in one of the upcoming versions.

**Printing export option**

We've also added the export option print. You can print your view directly or just export it to pdf. Find out how to print your Detail View Editor [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/how-to-print-the-worksheet.md).

**Action column**

Our beloved action column we have on Data Center is now available in the Cloud as well. Now you can do many things you do in the issue view just from here.

**JQL Detail View Editor limit**

In the JQL Detail View Editor we have increased the limit of issues you can view here. Also, we've added a display of the loading progress.

Here are some additional things we've added:

* flagged column can be added

* linked issues counter column can be added

* new loading animation with a cancel option to stop loading up issues

* bigger editor for container links to improve the editing experience

* improved scrolling with parents being pinned at the top now

## Bugfixes

Fixed an issue with aggregation in the Detail View Editor. If the parent was the only issue that had a value but was not part of the filter, the value was still shown. Now no value will be shown.

Deleting the remaining estimate sometimes messed up the original estimate. This is now fixed.

When creating an issue, writing a summary is now mandatory. The button is disabled before you do. After you have created the issue it will also show the priority directly.

Fixed an issue that caused the parent progress bar to display incorrectly when uncollapsing a level.

## Jira Cloud Migration Assistant support

With this release you can migrate Epic Sum Up to Cloud using the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant. Configurations can now be directly migrated without you having to manually reconfigure everything in Cloud. Because of the feature differences between Cloud and Server/Data Center some features like containers and time fields can't be migrated yet.

Read [this page](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/migration-from-server-to-cloud.md) to learn more about the migration process.

## Deep Clone for Jira integration

We're excited to announce a new integration with Deep Clone for Jira. Using the 'Show issues in' button you can now send your issue hierarchy from the Detail View Editor to Deep Clone's bulk clone.

[Take a closer look](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/integrations-of-epic-sum-up.md) at the integration.

## Bugfixes

**Create issues filter**

Previously the filter for which issue types can be created displayed all issue types instead of only the ones that could be created. This gave the impression that you could create bugs underneath stories when in turn you could only create sub-tasks. This is now fixed.

## Expressions

Jira expressions are custom rules that use JavaScript-like syntax. Similar to JQL, they can be used to find and filter information in Jira.

With the new version, they can now be used in Epic Sum Up as well. When configuring your Summary Panel, you can add expression counters and progress bars.

The counter simply displays the results of the expression for the hierarchy.

The progress bar displays the results of the expression for the hierarchy based on how many issues are resolved and unresolved. This is the default progress bar behavior and can't be changed.

Whatever custom KPI you need to track, expressions make it possible.

For anyone unfamiliar with expressions, we offer a few templates in the app and a template library in our documentation.

A complete guide on how to work with expressions including templates can be found [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/expression-customization-guide.md).

## Configurable progress bars for dashboard gadgets

If you add a 'Configurable progress bar' to the 'Filter results grid gadget' you can add any Epic Sum Up progress bar and configure its settings right in the gadget configuration. This includes predefined progress bars e.g. time, custom numerical progress bars e.g. story points, calculated progress bars and expression counters and progress bars.

Simply add one and configure it directly in the gadget's settings.

Read more [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/dashboard-gadget.md).

## Custom progress bar descriptions

Previously, the progress bar name was predefined in the app or by the custom field name. Now, every progress bar has a description field in its configuration where you can adjust the name.
![Pgb description config.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_6b2d8a303f09f8c02cf99b2b00d33292e2d7e97953ac4822f136860c2ebf37fc/Pgb%20description%20config.jpg?cb=d8405dcf34f1d94afb766fabe9ef316a)

## Progress bar sizes

In the Detail View Editor, progress bar sizes can vary significantly. This is because the size is calculated in relation to the values of all the issues. For example, progress bars with high values (e.g., time spent) will appear much larger than others. When there is a large difference between values, progress bars can become difficult to read.

To ensure that all progress bars are clearly visible, you have the option to toggle off the size relation between progress bars. Now, all progress bars will be the same size and easy to read.

This option can be found in the column menu.

# Version 4.3.0

Because this is a major update, you need to manually update your Epic Sum Up version to get access to all new features.

## New time duration custom field type

You can now use our new custom field type, **(Epic Sum Up) Time**, to add budgets to your time progress bars. This field is specifically designed for this use case but can be used for other purposes as well. Previously, it was only available on Data Center. Now that it's available for both hosting options, fields of this type created on Data Center can also be migrated to Cloud.
![ESU time field.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_d48704b2e398688230205a3eeece787904a22c86a59a7c9766b76e40ffafdb71/ESU%20time%20field.jpg?cb=b257cd289c4037a54e7521d56fbcc46b)

### New custom time progress bar

Another Data Center feature is coming to Cloud! By using **(Epic Sum Up) Time** custom fields, you can configure different time fields for original estimate, remaining estimate, and time spent. For further customization, Epic Sum Up also provides options like **Total time** and **Calculated remaining time**.
![Custom Time Progress Bar.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_8906fa8b8e2ddd46f8552e2f770308c0b09df421cd2ef1a58908cdca27ea3d34/Custom%20Time%20Progress%20Bar.png?cb=9a804d549c0008093b69d7c26bdfd691)

### Migration assistant support for new features

Both the custom time progress bar and the new time duration custom field can now be migrated using the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant. Please make sure you have the latest Cloud version 4.3.0 installed before starting your migration process.

### New Detail View Editor columns

Both the attachment counter and comment counter are now available as columns in the Detail View Editor. Clicking on a counter in the column opens the related overview.

# Version 5.0

Because this is a major update, you need to manually update your Epic Sum Up version to get access to all new features.

This is a major update because we migrated Epic Sum Up from Connect-on-Forge to Forge.

## Runs on Atlassian

The transition to Forge was necessary in order for us to participate in the Runs on Atlassian program. That means that customers who use Epic Sum Up now have full control over their data egress, Epic Sum Up is completely hosted on Atlassian infrastructure and we support data residency.

## New expression templates

Our InApp template library has been expanded. We've added several new templates for both the expression progress bar and counter. The only difference to the already existing templates is that you need to select certain fields in order for the expressions to work. Once you've selected the required fields the expression works without you having to modify it manually.

The new templates are:

**Progress bar**

* Story points hour estimation

* Story points hour estimation complex

* Only story issues

* Only standard issue types

* Labour costs

* Labour costs with additional expenses

**Counter**

* Time spent by user group

## Configurable progress bars for the dashboard gadget

Progress bars on the dashboard gadget are now completely customizable. Simply add an Epic Sum Up progress bar and configure away.
![Configurable pgbs.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_cc2fc05c086f9c492389e9208d79e25e3c8eaf7917dac1c29c2d17b0485da4b1/Configurable%20pgbs.jpg?cb=a34b94afd9c1d933a6caf041728dab85)

## New permissions

Permissions are now a separate tab in the global configuration. We've added the following permissions:

* Permission to use the delete key in the Detail View Editor

* General Detail View Editor edit permission

* Bulk edit permission

* Dashboard inline edit permission

![Permissions.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_60cdeab83b3e14bb89732c33b1a9b51b0dad9df10adac02d6d1877d95a0a03e9/Permissions.jpg?cb=1f230e264a560bd1dcf6e4687b13676d)

## Toggle for logging time in the Detail View Editor

To the global configuration we've added a toggle to activate/deactivate logging time in the Detail View Editor.
![4.6 Log time in DVE toggle.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_89f26b42e8cb1213cd802a3bfcb5a6d6d7eba2b3e57208e4f9f76d13ac49277a/4.6%20Log%20time%20in%20DVE%20toggle.jpg?cb=79197a480fb941e4157457926daf534e)

## Issue types can be edited

You can now change the issue type directly from the Detail View Editor.

## New time field for budgets in team-managed projects

The Epic Sum Up time field can now be added as a budget in team-managed projects. Keep in mind that you need to add it to the project first.

## Comments ranking

By default comments are now sorted from new to old.

## **Use containers in Cloud just like on DC**

Containers in Cloud are now easier to set up and manage thanks to the new **container link** custom field which is similar to the **Parent** field in Jira. Previously, containers in Cloud relied on work item links, but now you can choose between using the work item link method or the new dedicated field.

For teams already using containers on Data Center, this means you can now work with containers in Cloud in the same way you're used to without needing to change your workflows.

[Learn more about Containers](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/containers.md)
![image-20251215-082509.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_1ec8ad68a5809b6db7d26d9cbbce51bb40914a2c027c04c6a41f52908f406fa3/image-20251215-082509.png?cb=dc9fe7fb4cc1c50130e8a44e1748ff84)

## **Understand your project structure at a glance**

When using containers, you can now add a **container panel** to the work item view. It shows the full hierarchy underneath each container. You can expand or collapse levels, add more fields, and save custom layouts to focus on what matters most.
![image-20251215-081652.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_d01e1fe5a7da3cb333ae7675f162a3cab1cd4af67574024ee0a49b641c2c749e/image-20251215-081652.png?cb=d3cc1a712f2e7fc76199ea9f60db5ebb)

## **Configure containers globally**

The **global container configuration** now gives admins full visibility and control. Choose whether to use work item links or the container link field, you can only use one at a time. See how often container links are used including a link to a JQL that tells you exactly which work items are used as containers.

[Container configuration](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md)
![Container configuration-20251215-083959.jpg](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_ce497262ebc64d89931c98cf9422fa07cf394c28a6812940ef642462f0c20f19/Container%20configuration-20251215-083959.jpg?cb=77ac790d951c4e20ada4ab085be3c245)

## **Smoothly migrate containers from DC to Cloud**

If you've been using containers on Data Center, your existing container links now migrate seamlessly to Cloud. No manual updates or remapping are needed, reducing migration effort and risk.

[Migration guide](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/migration-from-server-to-cloud.md)

## **Personalise your timesheet views**

You can now **save timesheet column layouts**, so you don't need to rebuild your view every time. Save personal layouts or, if you're an admin, publish global ones for your team.
![image-20251215-084419.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_45954d052a63e54a6e6ce61cf27c8cf3ce8d4f15797e97dff10deb31ea37b8e0/image-20251215-084419.png?cb=45f13d6cbf62b1a280c14ba5dc4b76de)

## **Keep your preferred view**

In both the **Detail View Editor** and **timesheet**, your saved layouts can now include filters, sorting preferences, and column sizes. Simply switch on the toggles you need before saving---your setup will stay just the way you left it.
![image-20251215-084555.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_80b90392688cd45f3945b782a1f66aedc5c6d4978c35b6b684853dfe9e6bc446/image-20251215-084555.png?cb=1621f988f2ddd3af6298999d8d464628)

## **Reuse configurations across projects**

To help teams standardise faster, you can now copy and paste **Summary Panel** and **progress bar** configurations between projects---or between global and issue-level configurations.

[Summary Panel configuration](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/cloud/summary-panel-configuration.md)

## **Show or hide the Summary Panel per space**

Each space now includes a toggle in **space settings** that lets you activate or deactivate the Summary Panel. It's active by default, but you can turn it off anytime.
![image-20251215-085554.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_44606141c2c09315e27767d5e63c4783b2d9f8ee73a77fef40b0b871c7941b33/image-20251215-085554.png?cb=c3b0e325ebe2eef52c7a6e3ab0f8a8e7)

## **Log work with precision**

When adding work logs from the **Detail View Editor** , you can now specify both **date and time**. This allows for more accurate reporting and time tracking.
![image-20251215-085820.png](https://docs.epicsumup.com/__attachments/a_51ec6db3ccc6be036e33a3f6ce267fae36e3e8ebe4230c7f38dd70f273a96ccb/image-20251215-085820.png?cb=fcf15515fbee6b4c9c2b66308406d377)

## **Clear feedback when permissions block copy \& paste**

If the **ESU bulk editing** permission is limited to specific groups (e.g., admins), users outside those groups now see a clear error message when attempting to copy \& paste in the Detail View Editor. This removes confusion and helps users understand how to get access if needed.

## **Consistent progress bar categories everywhere**

Progress bar and counter categories are now aligned across the dashboard gadget and the Summary Panel configurations.

# Advanced use cases with ESU

## Key features of ESU

We developed ESU so that we could add useful features. These additional features from ESU allow project managers and admins to expand the power of Jira. Key features include:

*Progress bars* - visual indicators of project progress

*Summary Panels* - easy-to-view panels which can be set up in a sidebar

*Custom fields* - Use specific ESU custom fields to customize layouts and dashboards

*Dashboard gadget* - ESU's dashboard gadget lets you use ESU custom fields and progress bars for a more customized layout

*Worksheet* - A structured issue viewer \& spreadsheet editor

*Timesheet* - An overview of issues, which you can sort and customize the way you want

## Initial configuration

To get to [global settings](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/data-center-server/summary-panel-configuration.md) for ESU, first find the administration page in Jira \& navigate to Manage apps. From Manage apps, navigate to the ESU global configuration settings in the left-hand sidebar menu.

### [Permissions](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/data-center-server/summary-panel-configuration.md)

Within general settings, scroll down and you will see permission settings menus for Summary Panels, and Timesheets. These permissions allow you to limit access to certain Jira groups that you can set up, if you choose to, for your organization.

### [Container](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/data-center-server/summary-panel-configuration.md)

You can configure which issue types you want in ESU containers. To do this, navigate to the ESU global configuration settings.

### [Summary Panel](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/data-center-server/summary-panel-configuration.md)

Within general settings you can configure issue types that you want to display the Summary Panel on. If you click on the Summary Panel tab, you can customize the global Summary Panel from here.

### Most common use cases

ESU offers a number of features that can be used by Jira administrators, and project managers, in different ways depending on how you choose to set things up. Progress bars offer an easy way to view progress on issues. There are other features such as Summary Panels, and the Worksheet, which offer increased convenience and efficiency. We will go into different use cases of various features [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/data-center-server/most-common-use-cases.md).

### Java API

ESU has a Java API guide, which may be useful to developers. Click [here](https://docs.epicsumup.com/epic-sum-up-help-center/4.8/data-center-server/public-java-api-documentation.md) to view the Java API guide.
